UN Global Compact Network in Ukraine conducted a Clean Up weekend at the Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv
6 July, 2008 On Sunday, 6 July the UN in Ukraine and the UN Global Compact Network in Ukraine initiated and conducted the first practical corporate event within the framework of the National Go Green Campaign – Clean Up Dnipro Day at the Trukhaniv Island in Kyiv. The event gathered over 60 participants, who came to clean up the recreational zone of Matveevska Zatoka from the garbage, in spite of the rain and bad weather conditions.
Among the participants of the Clean Up were the corporate volunteers - employees of the Global Compact member companies and organizations, their families and friends. The official welcoming addresses were delivered by Ms. Ruken Tekes, Coordination Specialist of the UN System in Ukraine, Mr. Taras Trotsky, Head of the International department if the Ministry of Environmental protection and Mr. Mykola Babich, Deputy Head of the State Committee on the Water Management of Ukraine.
In course of the Clean Up all participants met at the gathering point of an old abandoned cafe “Lastivka” located near the Pedestrian Bridge. Each participant got a pair of rubber gloves and garbage bag to cope with the heaps of rubbish in the Dnipro river green zone. Free soft drinks for everybody were kindly provided by Coca-Cola Beverages in Ukraine. Following up the cleaning activities, a cultural program featuring the folklore-style celebration of Ivana Kupala Slavic holiday and the entertainment for the kids delivered by a clown duo has been conducted with the support of Coca Cola System in Ukraine.
As a result of the Clean Up, 800 kilograms of garbage has been collected. All gathered garbage has been picked up by Greenco-Kyiv waste management company for further sorting out and recycling at the “Greenco-Center”.
All participants who took part in the Clean Up got complimentary memorable Go Green! pins, produced with the financial support of Institute for Oil Transportation as a sign of appreciation of their efforts.
