The 6th Regional Presentation of Global Compact Initiative

Regional presentation of Global Compact took place in Simferopol in conference hall of the Council of Ministers of AR Crimea on Thursday, May 28. The presentation was organized by United Nations Office in Ukraine and the Ministry of Economy of AR Crimea in cooperation with Crimean Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The event aimed to present Global Compact to Crimean business as the biggest corporate social responsibility initiative in the world and also to discuss successful examples of companies, who follow corporate social responsibility principles throughout their business practices.

Representatives of over 30 leading companies, Crimean NGOs and mass media participated in the event. They were greeted by Ms. Svetlana Verba, Minister of Economy of AR Crimea and Mr. Ercan Murat, UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in Ukraine.

“Today, as never before, it is crucial that companies realize why the implementation of Global Compact principles makes sense in practice”, - noted Mr. Ercan Murat, UNDP Resindent Representative a.i. in Ukraine. “Socially responsible business meets society’s expectations and builds up trust, which is necessary for companies’ economic activities”, - he added.

Minister of Economy of AR Crimea, Svetlana Verba in her statement stressed that “in the situation when business influences all aspects of social life, companies’ participation in social problems solving is critical”. 

During the official ceremony Mr. Ercan Murat presented Global Compact Certificates to representatives of Crimean companies who became the first GC members in the Crimea: Mr. Batalin, Chairman of JSC “Fiolent”, Mr. Belozerov, Communications Director of JSC Shipyard Zaliv and Mr. Basov, Vice-president of Crimean Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

After official greetings, Yuliya Shcherbinina, UN Public-Private Partnership Officer, talked about Global Compact Network in Ukraineactivities, goals and working mechanisms. On their side, Crimean companies shared their experience in implementation of corporate social responsibility in practice.  

At the end of the event, Deputy Minister of Economy of AR Crimea, Mr. Vyacheslav Reznik stressed the importance of social partnerships and said: “Today’s event is a good example of Ukrainian business community readiness to take an active role in solving social issue”. Mr. Ercan Murat, UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in Ukraine, expressed his hope that “Global Compact Initiative will become a significant part of the transformation of the role of business on all levels in Ukraine”. After the official part of the presentation, participants were invited to cocktail.
