Istanbul, Turkey

On 8-11 June the delegation representing GC Network Ukraine attended the 7th Global Compact Annual Local Network Forum (ALNF) in Istanbul.

Ukrainian delegates included Mr. Jock Mendoza-Wilson, Chair of the Steering Committee, System Capital Management, Ms. Maryna Saprykina, Director, Center for CSR Development and GC Secretariat- Ms. Yuliya Shcherbinina and Ms. Anna Danylyuk.

More than 300 participants representing around 80 local networks attending the Forum, agreed on a set of recommendations concerning the role of networks in companies' Communication on Progress, the initiative's annual disclosure requirement; the engagement of micro enterprises (businesses with less than 10 employees); the engagement of civil society organizations; and the governance of networks. The recommendations had been developed by four network working groups established  at the 2008 ALNF in Bonn, Germany.

The two-day Forum saw a variety of presentations and discussions, covering a wide range of issues, from network management to the networks' practices in advancing the Global Compact's core issue areas - human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

"The 7th Annual Local Networks Forum has given new momentum to the Global Compact's efforts in promoting and advancing corporate responsibility and sustainability in every corner of the world," said Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact. "The ever-growing number of local networks and the record attendance here in Istanbulalso underline the heightened relevance of responsible business in the context of the global recession."

Also at the Forum, the Global Compact Office released its Local Network Report 2008 (pdf), an annual survey of network activities around the world.

The next ALNF will be held in conjunction with the 2010 Global Compact Leaders Summit on 24-25 June 2010 in New York.
